Indigenous Australians inhabited the area of Burleigh Heads thousands of years prior to European settlement. This particular tribe were known as the Kombumerri clan, named after the area, ‘Jellurgal’. Burleigh Heads features a prominent north-east facing beach which is protected by the point to south, and offers of the best swimming, body boarding and surfing beaches on the Gold Coast. A bi-monthly village market occurs at Burleigh Heads State School that promotes local emerging designers and artists. Several schools are located in Burleigh, including two state primary schools, Caningeraba State School and Burleigh Heads State School.
